Abba Mallum: A Life Changed by Cancer Advocacy in KZN and Beyond
When a young woman faced a life-threatening diagnosis in northeastern Nigeria, it became the catalyst for Dr. Abba Mallum’s highest professional purpose. Now a pioneering figure in radiotherapy and oncology across Africa, his journey began with a simple act of compassion: helping a patient navigate the challenges of cancer care.
In Borno State, his early encounters with patients ignited a commitment to service. A phrase that sticks with him: “Doctor, I know you.” This simple exchange revealed a reality where financial barriers kept care inaccessible. Impoverished mothers begged for transport, trusting doctors to provide free treatment. A moment lengthened into a story that reshaped his career path.
After graduating from medical school, Mallum pursued advanced studies at Stellenbosch University, where he tackled the complex realities of healthcare in underserved regions. His PhD focused on evaluating hypofractionated radiotherapy—shortening treatment sessions while maintaining efficacy. This research, first in South Africa and later at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, emerged from a single patient’s desperate plea: “Doctor, I know you.”
Survival stories remain his driving force. One patient, barely recognizable months after a visit, is still battling cancer years later. Moments like these remind him that cancer doesn’t sleep, and neither does hope.
Today, Mallum bridges continents as an associate professor at Walter Sisulu University and associate director of radiation medicine and oncology at UKZN. He advocates for expansion of cancer services, emphasizing that “medicine first speaks a sense of awe—then healing.”
His work now centers on training the next generation of African oncologists and advocating for decentralized care. In Durban, he walks alongside colleagues, rebuilding hope one conversation at a time.
