The Punjab Home Department has formally requested the interior ministry to deploy Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel to secure the upcoming Muharram period.
In a June 4 correspondence with the interior ministry, the Home Department urged swift approval of the troop requisition sought by the Punjab Police chief to provide security support.
The letter emphasized that the present security climate necessitates a comprehensive, fail‑safe security framework for Muharram to thwart potential terrorist or criminal activities.
Overall, the request encompasses 137 companies of the army and Rangers — 61 from the Pakistan Army and 76 from the Rangers — spanning at least 37 districts throughout Punjab.
The deployment is sought for Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana, Gujranwala, Narowal, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Khushab, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Chiniot, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Okara, Pakpattan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Kot Addu.
A single army company has been requested for Vehari, while Rangers are to be deployed in Sialkot, Jhelum, Mianwali, Lodhran, and Rahim Yar Khan; no units have been requested for Kasur or Murree.
These contingents will be tasked with providing security throughout the Muharram period, from the first to the twelfth day, as stipulated in the department’s letter.
Additionally, the department has released comprehensive guidelines on peace and order for Muharram, mandating heightened vigilance and extensive preventive measures to guarantee security.
A seven‑page directive issued to all police and civil administration on Friday counselled comprehensive security measures, even in remote locales, and emphasized prompt, proactive intelligence sharing among all law‑enforcement agencies.
Punjab Inspector General Abdul Kareem reviewed the Muharram security plan at the Central Police Office last week, acknowledging that safeguarding the month had grown increasingly complex, and ordered officers to execute their responsibilities with unwavering dedication.
