U.S. Launches Strikes on Iran After Downed Apache Helicopter]
The U.S. military conducted strikes against Iran on Tuesday at the direction of President Trump, who accused Tehran of downing an Army attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. The action signaled ongoing escalation despite efforts to maintain a fragile cease-fire.
U.S. Central Command described the strikes as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.” Iranian state television reported explosions and air-defense activity along the Persian Gulf coast, including in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik.
Two Iranian officials, speaking anonymously, said the strikes targeted military bases, naval facilities, radars, and missile launchers at five locations along Iran’s southern coast.
Earlier Tuesday, President Trump stated on social media that Iranian forces had downed an Apache helicopter the previous night. Both crew members were rescued within two hours and remained in stable condition, according to military officials.
“Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” Trump wrote.
The incident occurred amid renewed tensions between Iran and Israel over the weekend and into Monday, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict. Iran did not directly acknowledge downing the aircraft, but Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that foreign forces operating near Iranian territory faced risks from human error or crossfire.
“The best solution is for them to leave,” Araghchi said. “We prefer diplomacy but speak other languages too.”
The U.S. strikes coincided with Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, despite a new U.S.-brokered cease-fire. Lebanon’s health ministry reported at least eight deaths and numerous injuries in Tyre following the latest attacks.
The intertwined conflicts highlight the difficulty of stabilizing the region. A April cease-fire was intended to halt hostilities but has largely only slowed the pace of violence. Sporadic negotiations mediated by Pakistan and Qatar have yet to produce a breakthrough.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the helicopter went down near the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters. An Iranian Shahed drone downed the aircraft, according to a U.S. official.
A U.S. Navy robotic vessel rescued the two crew members and transferred them to a helicopter for transport. The AH-64 Apache, armed with Hellfire missiles, has been patrolling the Strait of Hormuz to deter Iranian drone threats and challenge Iranian control of the waterway.
In response to Iran’s blockade, the U.S. has enforced restrictions on ships since April 13, turning away or disabling 134 vessels. On Monday, an F/A-18 Super Hornet disabled a Palau-flagged oil tanker that ignored warnings to alter course.
The ongoing Persian Gulf tensions parallel the war between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon. Hezbollah rejected the latest cease-fire, calling it tantamount to surrender, while Israel continues its offensive despite diplomatic efforts to halt the violence.
Israeli strikes Tuesday targeted multiple locations in southern Lebanon, including Tyre, where an evacuation warning was issued for the first time in the Christian quarter. The Lebanese government has limited influence over Hezbollah’s actions.
Over 3,600 people have been killed and one million displaced in Lebanon since the conflict began in March. Thirty deaths have been reported in Israel.
Following weekend exchanges between Israel and Iran, both sides indicated restraint, though Iran warned it would strike back if Israel resumed attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the threat, asserting that while Iran and Hezbollah had been weakened, “our battle against them is still not finished.”
