The 6th match of Group 1 in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 will pit arch‑rivals India and Pakistan at Birmingham’s historic Edgbaston Stadium on Sunday, 14 June. With a capacity crowd expected, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has called on her side to abandon caution and play fearless cricket from the first ball.
Harmanpreet Kaur promises fearless cricket in opener against Pakistan
India arrive at the tournament after a productive warm‑up schedule that tested squad depth. The Women in Blue secured a comfortable win over the West Indies but suffered a narrow five‑run loss to hosts England in a dramatic final‑over finish. Despite the defeat, the side used the experience to evaluate bench strength and build confidence ahead of the main event.
A standout performance came from youngster Richa Ghosh, who blasted 68 runs off just 36 balls against England, nearly steering India to a chase of 172. Kaur noted that a shortage of middle‑order partnerships cost them the game, but emphasized that the overall preparation has infused the squad with self‑belief, knowing they possess individual match‑winners capable of turning any contest.
“These two practice games have given us a lot of confidence. Even though we lost, Richa’s batting was a big positive for us. It shows that if we stay on the pitch, we can turn the game at any moment,” Kaur said after the warm‑up match.
The management used the warm‑up fixtures to provide tactical flexibility, giving every player a chance to adjust to English conditions. Competing in a group that includes Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh and debutants the Netherlands, India faces a tough road to the knockouts. Starting the campaign with a marquee clash against Pakistan adds a sensational atmosphere that the skipper says the team is eager to embrace.
“What a way to start it—Pakistan in Birmingham. That will be a sensational atmosphere. We are really looking forward to it and hope to play fearless cricket in our first game,” Kaur added.
Strategic depth and tournament outlook in the expanded 12‑team extravaganza
India’s best finish at a Women’s T20 World Cup came in 2020, when they were runners‑up to Australia. The 2026 edition is historic, expanding to 12 teams for the first time. While established nations qualified directly via rankings, emerging sides such as the Netherlands earned their places through rigorous global qualifiers, reflecting the growing depth of women’s cricket.
The tournament features 33 matches across seven iconic English venues, culminating in semi‑finals on 30 June and 2 July and a final at Lord’s on 5 July. As India chases its first T20 World Cup title, Kaur’s side aims to set an aggressive, uncompromising tone from the opening delivery in Birmingham.
