Thomas Partey Denies Canada Visa, Announces World Cup Availability
Partey’s visa rejection centers on severe rape allegations in the UK, reshaping his World Cup campaign timeline.
Ghana’s midfielder Thomas Partey has confirmed he will not participate in the team’s opening match following Canada’s denial of his visa. The decision comes as he awaits trial for multiple charges in the United Kingdom. FIFA communicated Monday that Partey will not be able to travel from his team’s base camp in Smithfield, Rhode Island, to play in the upcoming tournament. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) emphasized that each applicant is evaluated individually based on applicable laws. Partey is expected to resume his role in Ghana’s World Cup opener on June 23, following his trial, which may begin in November or later. His case draws attention amid Ghana’s participation in future tournaments. While Partey has previously faced legal challenges with English clubs, his current legal scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions underscores the complexity of his international journey. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi is also awaiting trial on similar charges in Paris. This situation marks Ghana’s fifth appearance in the global tournament history.
