INGLEWOOD, Calif. – International soccer is often associated with tight defensive battles, but on Friday the U.S. men’s national team delivered a strikingly offensive display. Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT played with intensity, creativity and flair, securing a 4‑1 victory against Paraguay.
“In the first 45 minutes we were amazing,” Pochettino told DAZN after the match. “It’s rare to find a team that plays like this, but I’m so happy and proud.”
The first half was the best the team has produced since Pochettino took over in fall 2024. Early balls over the top sparked a multi‑pronged attack, leading to nutmegs, flicks and, most importantly, goals. By the 31st minute the United States led 2‑0, and they extended the margin to 3‑0 before halftime.

Forward Folarin Balogun was the standout performer, scoring two of the three first‑half goals while Damian Bobadilla’s own goal opened the scoring. Balogun’s form underscored Pochettino’s emphasis on attacking talent, a strategy he has pursued throughout his two‑decade coaching career.
The USMNT’s fluidity was facilitated by midfielders like Malik Tillman, who linked defense and attack, and by full‑backs Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson, who contributed to the build‑up. Veteran Christian Pulisic set the tempo early, and Weston McKennie thrived in a versatile midfield role.
Paraguay pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, adding a spark to a relatively low‑intensity second half. Gio Reyna’s late substitution proved decisive, as he scored to relieve any lingering concerns about the United States’ offensive firepower.
At halftime, Pulisic was substituted after what many considered his best half in a US jersey. “He received a kick in his calf and felt tight,” Pochettino explained. “I hope it isn’t a big issue and that he can be ready for the next match.”
The team now faces a Group D showdown with Turkey in two weeks. For the first 45 minutes, the USMNT displayed a statement‑making performance that bodes well for the tournament, especially with a fully fit squad at Pochettino’s disposal.
“The fans were amazing today,” Pochettino said. “Now they see how big soccer is in America—maybe even bigger than other sports.”
