Lamine Yamal comes off the bench but cannot help Spain overcome World Cup debutants Cape Verde in a goalless stalemate.
Spain’s quest to reclaim World Cup glories began with frustration as they failed to score against Cape Verde in their opening match of the tournament.
Lamine Yamal, returning from a two-month hamstring injury, was introduced as a substitute but could not break Cape Verde’s resilient defense.
Despite Spain’s historical dominance of possession, their European champions’ struggles to convert chances echoed past World Cup disappointments, including exits in 2018 and 2022.
Coach Luis de la Fuente had praised his squad as one of the tournament’s strongest, yet the team’s performance highlighted the critical role of Yamal and Nico Williams in their campaign.
Williams, recovering from a season disrupted by injury at Athletic Bilbao, made only a brief appearance, entering the game in the 87th minute.
Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the FIFA standings, made their first World Cup appearance, showcasing pride on a global stage as the nation of under 500,000 people.
Hosted in Atlanta’s air-conditioned stadium, Spain faced no weather-related challenges, yet their slow build-up was met with boos from fans after a mid-half break, reflecting growing frustration.
Six minutes before halftime, Spain’s best chance emerged as Marc Cucurella’s cross was met by Torres, who sent the ball onto the crossbar. Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, saved Oyarzabal’s header shortly after.
Torres tested Vozinha again moments later, while Aymeric Laporte’s header from a corner was deflected away by the Cape Verde goalkeeper before halftime.
The second half saw little change, with Cape Verde maintaining their defensive structure until Yamal’s introduction after the second hydration break. His presence energized the crowd and added a spark to Spain’s attack.
Yamal’s first contribution set up Merino, who forced a save from Vozinha. A late attempt by Diney Borges in the final minutes of the match was thwarted by Simon, as Cape Verde narrowly missed a last-minute goal.
With the draw, Spain’s road to success begins with challenges, having previously lost to Switzerland in their 2010 campaign. They now prepare to face Saudi Arabia in Atlanta on Sunday.
Cape Verde’s next match will be against Uruguay in Miami.
