When Broncos linebacker Jonathan Cooper was recently arrested, his girlfriend was also taken into custody. The charge of criminal mischief against her has now been dropped, according to Mike Klis of 9News.com.
Her attorney welcomed the outcome.
“She should never have been charged in the first place, and the decision today by the district attorney’s office confirms that,” attorney Ronald Gainor told Klis. “This decision really goes a long way in vindicating her, and we’re very happy with the court’s decision today.”
Cooper’s own attorney, Harvey Steinberg, offered a very different reaction.
“White woman admits she was the aggressor,” Steinberg told Klis. “She admits she grabbed my client’s phone out of his hand, went through it without permission, and threw it against the wall, damaging it. She makes allegations against my client that the police do not appear to believe. Charges were dismissed against the white woman, but prosecution against the Black man continues. Justice in America.”
Cooper still faces multiple charges arising from the June 4 incident, including second‑degree assault, third‑degree assault, criminal mischief, violating a protective order, and harassment via repeated telephone calls.
After being excused from the team’s mandatory minicamp, the NFL could place Cooper on paid leave when training camp opens. He, a seventh‑round pick in 2021 who has started 17 regular‑season games for three straight seasons, will be monitored closely as the investigation proceeds.
