Halo composer Marty O’Donnell has addressed persistent rumors that Tom Cruise was considered for the role of Master Chief in Halo 2.
Halo 2 launched in 2004, following the massive success of the 2001 original. In 2024, Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes said that Tom Cruise had initially been approached to appear in the sequel, alongside Julia Roberts.
In a recent interview, Halo composer and voice director Marty O’Donnell confirmed a brief discussion with representatives of Cruise and Roberts about casting them in the game. “Tom Cruise was already a Bungie fan, believe it or not. He’d even played Myth, so we’d heard about him before,” he said. “Their agent suggested we should pursue a deal to cast Tom Cruise as Master Chief and Julia Roberts as Cortana in Halo 2.”
“I realized that would have ruined everything,” O’Donnell said. “I know gamers aren’t drawn primarily by star power; they seek engaging gameplay and compelling narratives.”
“I would have loved to work with Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts,” he added. “If I could have done it, it might have been cool, but there was no way I could replace Jen Taylor and Steve Downes, as fans had already formed a connection with those voices.” “That was merely a fun story that never progressed beyond that single conversation.”
Taylor and Downes will reprise their roles in the remastered Halo: Campaign Evolved, scheduled for release on July 28.
Halo: Campaign Evolved will offer expanded gameplay, two‑player split‑screen on consoles, online and networked co‑op for up to four players on console and PC, and seamless cross‑platform play with shared progression, according to Halo Studios. “It will serve as the definitive return journey through one of gaming’s greatest experiences,” the studio said.
The original Halo: Combat Evolved remains a cornerstone of gaming history and a cultural icon that helped define the first‑person shooter genre, the press release noted. “For Halo Studios, preserving the impact of that original campaign and its memorable moments is the ultimate aim, for both new players and longtime fans.”
