What significance does the death of Tren de Aragua founder Niño Guerrero have for organized crime?
Is the arrest of Fito’s brother in Ecuador likely to improve the country’s security situation?
Which Colombian presidential candidate is expected to gain voter support on security in the second-round election?
1: US Kills Tren de Aragua Leader in Venezuela
Niño Guerrero, the founder of the Tren de Aragua prison gang, was killed in a joint U.S.-Venezuelan missile strike in the state of Bolívar, ending a criminal career that began as a thief and drug dealer.
The impact of Guerrero’s death may be overstated, given that Tren de Aragua’s recent expansion into Brazil has attracted headlines. InSight Crime has analyzed his rise and fall and assessed that the gang, already fragmented across Peru and Chile, is unlikely to be significantly affected by his demise.
2: Fito’s Brother Captured
Javier Macías Villamar, known as “Javi” and brother of Ecuador’s Choneros leader José Adolfo Macías Villamar (“Fito”), was arrested in Colombia. He was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and had been residing in Colombia under a false identity. Fito, one of Ecuador’s most notorious gang leaders, was extradited to the United States in July 2025 to face drug and arms‑trafficking charges.
Javi’s capture, together with recent May 2026 convictions for asset laundering involving Fito’s partner and five relatives, is expected to significantly disrupt the Choneros’ financial and operational foundations and may further fragment the group.
3: Security Looms Large in Colombia Elections
Finally, conservative Abelardo de la Espriella and leftist Iván Cepeda, who present contrasting visions for Colombia’s future on security, drugs, and peace, will compete in the nation’s presidential runoff this weekend.
Cepeda advocates for peace, whereas de la Espriella, a former lawyer and admirer of Trump, has pledged to deploy security forces against all illegal actors in Colombia. Voters must choose between a hardline security stance and continued peace initiatives.
