Former WWE Superstar Layla has opened up about her initial reaction to the infamous and controversial “Piggy James” storyline.
The segment originally aired on the November 20, 2009, episode of SmackDown, where Layla and Michelle McCool targeted Mickie James with the nickname “Piggy James,” mocking her weight. The storyline caused significant emotional distress for James, who was visibly moved to tears during the broadcast. The angle drew widespread condemnation from fans, who criticized the writing as mean-spirited and unnecessary.
Appearing on the INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Layla detailed her thoughts when WWE creative first pitched the idea. While she admitted to being stunned by the direction, she felt a sense of gratitude that the company was providing the women’s division with significant television time and a central storyline, regardless of the controversial nature of the content. However, she noted that she remained deeply concerned for Mickie James’ well-being.
“When we were told about the first pre-tape, and then the actual segment, I was quite shocked, to be honest,” Layla explained. “I was surprised, but at the same time, I thought, ‘Wow, at least they’re investing in a Diva segment.’ They were giving us airtime and a storyline that actually mattered. Regardless of the subject matter, they were finally giving the women a narrative. I was grateful, but I was also constantly looking at Mickie, wondering if she was okay with it.”
Layla Discusses How the Segment Generated Real Fan Reaction
Layla further reflected on how the era’s focus on physical appearance shaped the division. She argued that while the segment was sensitive, its value lay in the “heat” it generated, which allowed the SmackDown women’s division to build a more intense and compelling narrative.
“I know Mickie was never overweight. You have to remember that during that era, women were constantly scrutinized for their looks. Our weight was a massive focus, and there were things we could get away with then that would never be permissible now. It was a very sensitive story for many, but I am glad it happened because it was the first time the Divas truly generated heat,” Layla said.
“People actually wanted to confront us at live events; women literally wanted to beat us up because they believed the characters so deeply. Beyond that, I think Mickie did an incredible job. If you look back at that storyline, it was effective because it gave the Divas division on SmackDown something substantial to work with,” she added.
Michelle McCool has also addressed the segment in previous interviews, noting that she made it a point to apologize to Mickie James every week following the broadcasts.
