Heading into the 2026 World Cup, Turkiye enters the tournament with significant expectations, having maintained a steady and competitive presence in the FIFA world rankings over the past several years.
As of the latest update on June 11, Turkiye is ranked 22nd globally with 1605.73 points. This standing is expected to remain fixed until the conclusion of the competition.
While a strong position, this is still a distance from the peak of their historical success, when the nation climbed as high as fifth place in 2004. Conversely, their lowest point occurred in 1993, when they fell to 67th.
Analyzing Group D Rivals
Based on current FIFA rankings, Turkiye is positioned as a primary contender to advance from Group D. Only the United States is ranked higher within the group, currently occupying the 17th spot.

The next closest competitor is Australia, who currently sits in 27th place. While the gap is narrow, the European side maintains a statistical advantage on paper.
The lowest-ranked team in the group is Paraguay, who currently occupy 41st place, making them the only side in Group D situated outside the top 30.
The FIFA Ranking Methodology
The FIFA rankings, published on the federation’s official website, are determined by a complex algorithm involving multiple variables. The next update is slated for July 19, with detailed documentation on the process available online.
According to FIFA: A new model took effect in August 2018 after approval by the FIFA Council. This new version relies on adding/subtracting points won or lost for a game to/from the previous point totals rather than averaging game points over a given time period as in the previous version of the World Ranking. The points which are added or subtracted are partially determined by the relative strength of the two opponents, including the logical expectation that teams higher in the ranking should fare better against teams lower in the ranking.
