LAPD Releases Body Camera Footage of Officer Fatally Shooting Woman’s Dog in Apartment Hallway]

The Los Angeles Police Department has released body camera footage showing officers fatally shooting a woman’s dog in the hallway outside her Canoga Park apartment.

Police responded to reports of a woman screaming on June 13, which turned out to be cheering after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Finals. The footage shows officer responding to Marie Marseille opening her door. Her two-year-old golden doodle Saint Bernard immediately barked at the blurred-faced officers.

One officer drew his gun and aimed it toward the doorway while shouting, “Put your dog away!” The officer filming noted, “That’s a big-ass dog,” to which his partner replied, “I ain’t getting bit by that, bro.”

Marseille attempted to contain the dog but left the door partially open. When the dog entered the hallway and barked repeatedly, the officer fired four shots. Both Marseille and the partner officer stood behind the dog during the shooting.

Video of Marseille sobbing over her dog Jameson’s body went viral after the incident. Mayor Karen Bass confirmed she discussed the use-of-force investigation with Chief Jim McDonnell.

LAPD released the edited footage with officers’ faces blurred—unusual for the department. Reporter Eric Leonard noted this was faster than normal release timing but lacked raw footage transparency.
