Greece Reconnects with Turkey Over Auctioned Historic Coins
The recent exchange saw Greek authorities return over 1,000 coins to Turkey as part of a collaborative initiative aimed at curbing antiquities smuggling. This joint effort highlights growing diplomatic and cultural cooperation between the two nations.
Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the retrieval of smugged coins on a Culture Forum held in Cappadocia. The items, seized in 2025, were identified as illegally transported from Turkey.
Ersoy emphasized the importance of strengthening cultural ties, stating that such actions preserve shared heritage. The event also highlighted the needs for restoration projects in Turkish sites, including the Tokali (Buckle) Church.
Minister Lina Mendoni praised the forum as a symbol of unity and emphasized that culture remains a vital bridge between societies. She stressed the need to protect historical artifacts not just as national assets but as universal responsibilities.
Further discussions focused on future collaboration in cultural preservation and the ongoing fight against artifact trafficking. It was noted that Turkey’s support extends beyond repatriation requests—it reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding history for future generations.
