Layla, one of WWE’s most recognizable English‑born divas, disclosed that Vince McMahon was unaware of her British roots during her tenure. She recounted the anecdote on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, explaining that McMahon assumed she hailed from Miami.
Having joined WWE prior to the company’s UK tour and winning the 2006 Diva Search, Layla noted that her accent was subtle in promos, which contributed to the confusion. As a result, McMahon never booked her for a show in England, believing she was not from there. Highlights of her comments follow:
On Her Accent Not Being Prominent In Promos
“So funny story about this, my first time ever being in England, standing by the ring, and then Michael Hayes comes out, and he’s like, ‘Hey, Vince didn’t even know you were from England.’ I go, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘Yeah. I just told Vince that you’re from England, you should probably be in the segment.’ He goes, ‘No, she’s from Miami.’”
“The whole time I didn’t know that I’d been there, probably a year or so. Even Vince didn’t know I was from England. I was being promoted as being from Miami, and he probably thought I had a Latin accent or something. That’s why I was never billed from England.”
On Her Shortest Match From Curtain To Curtain
“90 seconds.”
On Her Longest Match
“10 minutes.”
