Seven‑time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is set to make her grand‑slam return at Wimbledon, six years after her previous appearance.
Serena Williams has been awarded a wildcard entry into the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon, marking her comeback to Grand Slam competition.
The All England Club announced on Sunday that the American tennis legend, returning after a 3.5‑year hiatus, was named the eighth and final wildcard recipient in the women’s singles category.
Wildcards are granted by tournament organizers to players whose rankings prevent direct entry, typically favoring home-country athletes, those with distinguished careers, or high‑profile players returning from injury.
The tournament declared, “This is not a drill,” announcing Williams’s return on Instagram and X.
Williams, a seven‑time Wimbledon singles champion whose most recent title came in 2016, retired from the sport in 2022.
Her participation was confirmed after she accepted a ladies’ doubles wildcard to team up with her sister Venus. The sisters won six record‑equalling doubles titles between 2000 and 2016.
Williams made her Wimbledon debut in 1998, advancing to the third round of the singles draw.
At 44, Williams returned to competition at the Queen’s Club Championships, partnering with Canadian doubles player Victoria Mboko for her first match on June 9. The duo reached the quarterfinals before withdrawing due to a Mboko injury.
She also entered the Berlin Open last week, teaming with Czech player Karolina Muchova, but was eliminated in the round of 16.
Widely regarded as the greatest women’s player of the Open Era, she boasts 37 Grand Slam titles and 96 WTA career titles.
She stepped away from the tour after the 2022 US Open, stating she would ‘evolve away from tennis,’ though she never formally retired.
The mother of two announced her comeback in a June 2 social‑media post, sharing a video with the caption ‘Good news travels fast.’
The announcement generated significant buzz in the tennis world and was warmly welcomed by both current and former players.
