PM Shehbaz Sharif Vows Continued Support for US-Iran Dialogue After Swiss Talks]
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving US-Iran tensions, marking his first public remarks following a high-level meeting in Switzerland’s Burgenstock under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
“I am satisfied with the successful conclusion of these talks,” PM Shehbaz wrote on X, highlighting progress made during the negotiations.
He described the discussions as taking place in a “positive and constructive atmosphere,” yielding encouraging outcomes including a framework for a final agreement within 60 days, the formation of a high-level oversight committee, and the initiation of further technical dialogues. PM Shehbaz commended both the US and Iranian leadership for their “continued commitment to constructive engagement” and particularly acknowledged Qatar’s role in facilitating the process.
“A word of thanks to the Swiss Government for their facilitation in hosting these talks,” he said, also paying tribute to Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for “unwavering efforts” that ensured the talks’ success. PM Shehbaz credited the chief of defence staff’s “dedication, commitment and perseverance” for enabling progress on the diplomatic front.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed these sentiments, welcoming “substantial progress” and congratulating the prime minister and army chief on their “visionary leadership.” Dar emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing engagement through technical-level talks at Burgenstock and reiterated the nation’s commitment to achieving “lasting peace and stability in the region and beyond.”
Meanwhile, Iranian negotiators departed the Swiss venue after marathon sessions, with state media reporting that mediators claimed significant advances toward a definitive US-Iran deal. The host nation confirmed technical discussions would commence immediately, with negotiators entering a 60-day window to finalize a long-term settlement. Key issues on the agenda include Iran’s nuclear program and enriched uranium activities.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei noted that while a brief exchange occurred regarding nuclear matters, no detailed negotiations had yet begun. Simultaneously, concerns persist over the Gaza conflict, though the ceasefire has largely held since Sunday. Communication channels established between Tehran and Washington aim to de-escalate fighting in Lebanon and maintain safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to Pakistan and Qatar.
