Athapaththu scored just 2 runs as Sri Lanka fell to 98, a tally West Indies surpassed with five wickets in 23 balls. With two losses in three games, Sri Lanka’s group stage prospects depend on a strong finish against Ireland and Scotland.
The 36-year-old captain, playing her tenth T20 World Cup, expressed profound disappointment. “This loss is beyond words,” she said. “After 18 years representing Sri Lanka, I’ve never led the team to a World Cup semi-final.”
Athapaththu acknowledged personal achievements but emphasized her regret as captain. “I should have played more responsibly,” she stated. “As a seasoned player and team leader, this outcome feels like a personal failure I must carry.”
She referenced her final T20 World Cup participation: “At 36, fitness and opportunity will dictate my involvement. I’ll remain available if the team requires me, but decisions will depend on performance and health.”
Sri Lanka’s remaining Group 2 matches are against Ireland in Bristol (June 23) and Scotland in Manchester (June 26).
