Assim Madibo of Qatar has been handed a five-match ban for his reckless challenge on Canada’s Ismael Kone during the World Cup.
The 29-year-old was shown the red card in Qatar’s 6-0 loss last Thursday after a tackle that left Kone with a broken leg.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee confirmed the five-match suspension for serious foul play, noting that the decision can be appealed.
Kone sustained fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg; the former Watford midfielder will be sidelined for the remainder of the tournament.
The 24-year-old, now playing for Serie A side Sassuolo, had surgery soon after the match in Vancouver and received a hospital visit from Madibo.
Canada will face Switzerland in their final group match on Wednesday, aiming to top the group and advance to the round of 32.
Qatar must defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina to keep any hope of advancing from the group stage.
