Raul Jimenez has been a cornerstone of Mexico‘s advancement through the group stage at the 2026 World Cup, serving as the starting striker throughout El Tri’s early campaign. However, for the Matchday 3 encounter against Czechia, Jimenez has been dropped from the starting lineup.
Jimenez will come on from the bench for Mexico after head coach Javier Aguirre opted for rotation with six points already secured and the Group A lead secured. The tactical adjustment provides valuable rest for key starters while testing alternative tactical configurations.
Raul Jimenez of Mexico celebrates scoring against South Africa.
Mexico enters this matchup atop Group A with six points following victories over South Africa and South Korea. With Czechia sitting third in the group with one point and South Korea second with three, El Tri has mathematically secured top spot and the advantageous knockout-stage positioning that comes with it.
For the Czechia matchup, Aguirre deployed Julian Quinones on the left wing, Roberto Alvarado on the right wing, and Guillermo Martinez as the starting striker. This reshuffled attack allows Jimenez, Mexico’s all-time second-leading scorer with 46 international goals (tied with Jared Borgetti), to provide impact off the bench.
With the Round of 16 position confirmed, Mexico now awaits its knockout-stage opponent at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The host nation’s next high-stakes match is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30th, where they would face the third-placefinisher from Groups C, E, F, H, or I—currently projected to be Scotland, who holds three points but needs to secure their spot with a better goal differential.
