Only one match into the 2026 World Cup, Japan is already facing an injury setback. Takefusa Kubo will be unavailable for the upcoming fixture against Sweden, having also missed the recent victory over Tunisia.
Kubo’s absence stems from a knee injury sustained during Japan’s draw with the Netherlands. He was forced to leave the pitch in the 75th minute after becoming unable to continue.
While the injury has not officially ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament, his prospects for a quick return are fading as the competition intensifies. The attacking midfielder will not be included on the bench for the next match either.
Hajime Moriyasu Discusses Group Stage Outlook
While qualification for the next round is not yet guaranteed for any team in the group, Japan is in a strong position with 4 points. For Hajime Moriyasu, this match is vital as Japan aims to secure a top-two finish in the group.

During his press conference, the manager emphasized the importance of winning the group. Securing the top spot would allow Japan to avoid facing Brazil and facilitate a return to Monterrey, a location the squad is already familiar with.
Moriyasu noted: “We held a pre-tournament training camp here and played against Tunisia, so the players are already acquainted with the stadium atmosphere, pitch conditions, and venue logistics. Having the advantage of playing in a familiar environment is certainly beneficial.”
Moriyasu Evaluates Sweden
Sweden has displayed inconsistent form across their first two matches, alternating between a 5-1 win over Tunisia and a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands. Despite these fluctuations, Moriyasu views Sweden as a formidable opponent.
Moriyasu added: “Sweden is a very powerful team. They are defensively solid and dangerous on the counter-attack. This will be a difficult match, and our primary focus must be on securing the win. I hope our defenders are prepared to face world-class attackers like Isak and Gyökeres.”
