Manchester United are poised to join Europe’s elite clubs in signing 17‑year‑old Mexican attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora, according to a new report.
World Cup Rising Talent
Mora became the youngest player to represent Mexico at the World Cup during their opening match against South Africa in Mexico City.
The Tricolor earned a 2‑0 victory, with Mora coming off the bench in the 66th minute. The chaotic game ended with three red cards, and South Africa was reduced to nine players.
Mexico followed up with consecutive wins over Japan and the Czech Republic, securing a spot in the knockout phase. In the round‑of‑16 match, Mora earned his first World Cup start, becoming the tournament’s sixth youngest debutant. The current record holder is former Manchester United legend Norman Whiteside, who debuted for Northern Ireland at 17 years and 42 days in the 1982 World Cup.
Despite his youthful age, Mora has been a first‑team regular for Club Tijuana, who finished ninth in Liga MX last season. He made his debut at 15 and has scored ten goals and provided two assists in 53 appearances, becoming the youngest goal‑scorer in Mexico’s top division.
Mora’s maturity on the ball is striking. He possesses an immaculate first touch, dazzling dribbling, and constant awareness of the pitch. Analysts note his ability to deliver decisive through balls and his excellent decision‑making in possession.
The record‑shattering talent has attracted interest from top European clubs, including Manchester United, who dispatched scouts to Mexico to observe him during the World Cup.
Interest from Europe’s Elite
Reports indicate that United were among several European giants present at the Azteca Stadium, alongside Chelsea and Manchester City. Arsenal and Liverpool are also said to be contenders. Manchester United’s pursuit of Mora is described as the most aggressive among Premier League clubs, with regular contact maintained with the player’s camp to secure a potential transfer.
Real Madrid is considered a frontrunner, while Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona have shown strong interest in the youngster. Other European clubs, including Paris Saint‑Germain, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, are also reportedly keen.
Since INEOS took over Manchester United in 2024, the club has actively sought global young talent, exemplified by recent signings such as Chido Obi, Ayden Heaven, Diego Leon, and Sekou Kone.
If United can successfully acquire Gilberto Mora, it would represent a significant investment in what many see as the next superstar of football.
