Anthony Elanga’s spectacular injury-time equalizer secured Sweden’s progression to the World Cup knockout stages as they claimed a 1-1 draw against Japan in their Group F encounter.
The result ultimately enabled both nations to advance from the competition, with Japan joining Sweden in the last 16 as one of the two second-placed teams to progress.
Both sides appeared content with a share of the spoils following a lacklustre opening 45 minutes, though the second half delivered substantial drama. Japan claimed the lead through Daizen Maeda’s sliding finish after 55 minutes, but Sweden discovered late heroics as Elanga curled a magnificent left-footed effort seven minutes later to level the tie and guarantee their exit from the group stage.
Alexander Isak came agonisingly close to delivering a victor for Sweden in stoppage time, seeing a low drive pushed aside by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki before striking the crossbar from the subsequent corner.
Japan’s Daizen Maeda put his side ahead
The draw represents a cruel conclusion to Japan’s campaign, as only a four-goal victory margin would have sufficed to overhaul Scotland’s superior goal difference in the quest to join the knockout phase as a third-placed team.
Scotland’s hopes were cruelly ended despite managing to top their group, leaving them as the only team unable to progress despite collecting maximum points from their three matches.
