Suspect was intercepted at Bangkok’s international airport before departure.
Thai authorities have detained an Australian suspect linked to the alleged murder of a 17-year-old girl whose remains were found inside a suitcase near Pattaya’s resort areas. The 46-year-old man, identified as Simon Carman, was apprehended on Friday night at Suvarnabhumi Airport while attempting to board a flight to Perth, per official statements.
Law enforcement reportedly reviewed security footage placing the girl inside a condominium with Carman in the early hours of Thursday. Later camera records showed him exiting the premises with a sizeable black duffel bag, which authorities confirmed contained the victim’s body. The teenager—last seen alive by acquaintances—was reported missing that Friday afternoon, prompting a police raid on the location where she was last observed.
Emergency responders discovered the girl’s deceased body wrapped inside the case, which had been abandoned near a train track adjacent to her final known location. Forensic analysis revealed significant trauma to her face, including extensive bruising. A Pattaya police spokesperson confirmed Carman’s arrest, citing photographic evidence aligning with witness accounts of a physical altercation. “The suspect has visible injuries that match descriptions of a tussle,” noted police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu.
During another interview captured after his arrest, Carman attributed scratches on his neck to inspiration from an arachnid encounter. However, officials maintain he remains a prime suspect, facing charges spanning homicide, body concealment, and unlawful detention of a minor. A spokesperson for Australia’s Foreign Affairs Department confirmed consular support provision but declined further commentary. Recent Thai immigration reforms, enacted after stricter oversight following drug-related incidents, may influence proceedings against foreign nationals accused of crimes before deportation.
