The officiating at the FIFA World Cup is attracting growing scrutiny following a series of puzzling decisions and a perceived leniency towards physical play. Spain were particularly hard hit in their encounter with Uruguay and may face serious repercussions.
Spain’s campaign has been uneven across the opening three matches, with the team only finding rhythm against Saudi Arabia in the first half. Head coach Luis de la Fuente has defended his side’s performance and suggested that the fixtures presented unfamiliar challenges.
“This team’s work warrants praise. We are not accustomed to playing in this manner, yet we handled it well. The demands will increase, but I have confidence in this squad. They rarely concede goals and can score plenty. They continue to surprise me daily. This match differed markedly from our usual style, yet we managed to adapt,” he told Diario AS.
Coach Hopes for Normalised Matches
Late in the game, Uruguay defender Agustín Canobbio was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi. Spanish officials raised concerns over the referee’s permissive approach, prompting de la Fuente to express hope for a return to standard match conditions.
“I continue to admire Marcelo Bielsa. It is the players who deliver the matches. We knew this game would be exceptionally demanding. It is not the type of match where we feel most comfortable, but that is the purpose of officiating. The game was played on the edge, with high intensity and physicality, and we rose to the occasion,” he said.
“Refereeing is challenging, but VAR exists to assist in all contexts. I aspire for normal matches, focusing on the football itself rather than the officiating. I have enough to contemplate regarding the game. Ultimately, everyone bears responsibility,” de la Fuente added.
The coach also confirmed that Yeremy Pino will likely miss the rest of the tournament due to a shoulder injury, and cautioned that Nico Williams may be doubtful after a series of hard challenges.
De la Fuente: World Cup Demands Differ from Euros

In the clash with Uruguay, Spain produced only one shot on target, delivered by Alex Baena, a factor that proved decisive. De la Fuente explained that Spain’s performance is understandably different from the high‑intensity displays witnessed in their Euro 2024 campaign.
“I have complete faith in this team, recognizing that the demands of a World Cup differ from those of the European Championship. We face national teams with distinct characteristics, and the starting point varies. However, I am fully confident in this squad and believe our 34‑game unbeaten streak positions us favorably against Brazil. This demonstrates the team’s ambition for the highest level, and I am optimistic about our trajectory,” he said.
Spain topped the group and will face the runner‑up of Group J in the Round of 32. The match‑up is currently planned to be against Austria, but Algeria could overtake Spain with a win in their final game.
