Bryson DeChambeau arrived at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills hoping to play the weekend in a major championship for the first time in 2026. The two‑time U.S. Open champion had previously left the Masters early and missed the cut at the PGA Championship.
DeChambeau posted a 34‑minute YouTube video analyzing his two rounds at Shinnecock. He blamed green softness, wind‑related timing issues, misread putts, and highlighted a new TaylorMade prototype driver that delivered a 427‑yard drive for a birdie on the 12th hole. He also spoke about his wedge problems, saying they sometimes “slip on the face” and that he is working on a shaft‑to‑head weight combination.
DeChambeau started his round one under after 17 holes, but his momentum fell apart on Friday morning. After the first round was delayed by darkness, he took a practice swing that felt “off” in terms of timing and “jumping off the ground.” He drove the final hole of his first round into fescue and finished at even par.
On the second round, he opened with pars then recorded consecutive double‑bogeys, pushing his score to five over and effectively ending his tournament.
Later in the video he described a “smother hook” off the ninth tee at Aronimink, saying he “couldn’t time my golf swing” and the club head felt “dragged” rather than unloading.
DeChambeau summed up his recent struggles: “Not good enough golf.” He emphasized the need for better decisions, more comfort over the ball, improved wedge combination, and faster putting. He noted his tee‑shot distance remains elite but his iron play needs work.
Regarding speculation that his YouTube and LIV Golf commitments affect his majors play, he dismissed the idea, saying he is simply not feeling as comfortable as before. He highlighted his intensive swing‑research effort since the 2023 LIV Greenbrier 58 and the difficulty of replicating that success.
Concluding with a motivational note, he said, “Keep going.” He acknowledged the contrast between being a top major performer a year ago and the current criticism.
With LIV Golf on hiatus, his next major opportunity will be the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, where he aims to avoid missing all four 2026 majors.
