Tottenham’s aggressive summer transfer activity in defense signals a significant tactical shift under manager Roberto De Zerbi, potentially marking the end of Romero’s tenure as a fan favorite.
Spurs have already completed a £52 million signing of Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke and added Marcos Senesi on a free transfer from Bournemouth, moves interpreted as direct replacements for Romero’s unpredictable presence in central defense.
“Now, does that mean that Romero’s going to go?” King questioned. “I think Romero’s going to go. Whoever made him club captain, I could never ever understand that decision because you never knew whether he was going to finish a match.”
Despite acknowledging Romero’s qualities as a “world champion” and “tough South American defender,” King emphasized that the Argentine became “a loose cannon” during his time at Tottenham.
Romero’s contentious relationship with club hierarchy last season has reportedly increased the likelihood of a mutually beneficial summer separation.
Manchester United are positioned as frontrunners to secure Romero’s signature, with the Red Devils viewing the World Cup winner as a primary defensive target to form a Romero-Martínez partnership alongside fellow Argentine Lisandro Martínez at Old Trafford.
Atletico Madrid remain interested, with Diego Simeone known to admire the defender’s compatriot qualities, while Barcelona have also been linked with a move per Deco’s apparent interest in the Spurs star.
Real Madrid, who have historically monitored Romero’s situation, are again connected with a potential move, allegedly under new manager Jose Mourinho’s recruitment plans.
