Vaughan, a broadcaster and former England captain, stated that after England’s loss at The Oval, speculation suggested Stokes was being targeted following the nightclub incident that caused his Test absence, and Stokes would be aware of those involved.
Stokes has remained silent since announcing his retirement during the fourth day of the series-deciding match at Trent Bridge, though he informed stunned teammates before play that he would explain the reasons later in an emotional dressing-room address.
Vaughan, managed by Neil Fairbrother alongside Stokes, told the BBC’s Test Match Special that he believed Stokes’ decision stemmed from a breakdown in trust with the ECB.
“I have reflected on the past two weeks,” Vaughan explained. “As England captain, I must trust those I work with. I must trust everyone around me, including management and the ECB.”
“I believe there has been a distinct lack of trust, which I see as the triggering factor. I’m not suggesting this is the sole reason for Ben Stokes stepping down, but these circumstances — including a challenging winter and incidents both on and off the field — have played a role.”
He appeared uncharacteristically in the buildup to the first Test at Lord’s and was not performing at his usual level. The subsequent nightclub incident clearly strained relations with the ECB, and I believe it has contributed to a loss of trust.
Vaughan noted that at 35, Stokes may have simply chosen to step down due to a diminished ‘fire’ for the role, though he emphasized this stemmed from the aforementioned lack of trust.
“Fundamentally, it appears he’s realized the fight is gone and the fire within him has diminished.”
“I am keen to hear his explanation, especially given that at this stage he has performed well since returning from the incident — particularly with the ball: he took four wickets in the first innings, delivered a dominant spell, and showed competence with the bat.”
“However, I believe the fire within a player is sustained only when surrounded by a trustworthy team. A breach of that trust can extinguish it. I sincerely hope this is not a primary factor in his decision to step down.”
