A parcel bomb exploded Monday night at an apartment building in Monaco, leaving three occupants seriously injured—including a child—and prompting a cross-border manhunt for the perpetrator.
Monaco’s Prosecutor Stéphane Thibault said a man arrived alone at the building and dropped off the package before three residents of a ground-floor apartment approached the door, where the device detonated.
“The package exploded when those three people arrived,” Thibault said. He additionally noted two bystanders were hurt by flying glass from nearby storefront windows.
Christophe Mirmand, Monaco’s head of government, told French broadcaster BFM TV that the motive remains unclear and that no such incident has previously occurred in the principality.
The three victims—a man, woman, and child—were treated for their injuries. By Tuesday morning, the man was no longer in life-threatening condition, while the woman remained critically injured. The child underwent overnight surgery and was never considered to be in immediate danger, according to Thibault.
Surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing toward French territory. Mirmand said the individual appeared to reach Beausoleil, a French town directly across the border, though locating them is challenging due to the short distance between the two areas.
The French Interior Ministry is coordinating with Monaco authorities in the ongoing investigation, which has been classified as attempted murder and the planting of explosive devices in a public space.
