UK Considers Blocking Shot $110 Billion Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery Merger After Global Clearances
Britain may intervene to block Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, a deal valued at $110 billion, following approvals from the United States, China, Australia, Germany, France, and Saudi Arabia. The potential intervention could see the transaction referred to the UK’s competition regulator, which made headlines in 2023 when it blocked Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The regulatory body later reversed its decision after Microsoft revised its acquisition plan. This possible intervention comes as Britain’s culture minister Lisa Nandy raised concerns about the deal’s potential impact on news, children’s television, and streaming services in the UK. Nandy, an ally of Andy Burnham who is set to become Britain’s next prime minister in July, stated she would make a timely decision and gave the companies until July 6 to respond to her concerns.
