Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring with a brilliant crossover step in the 45th minute and added a second-half goal to set a new record for most World Cup knockout round objectives, leading France to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday. The win secured France’s place in the round of 16 where they will face Paraguay.
Bradley Barcola extended the advantage with a goal in the 53rd minute, and Mbappé sealed the result with his third two-goal performance in four matches during the 74th minute.
Mbappé’s six goals for the tournament are level with Argentina’s Lionel Messi and bring his career World Cup total to 18, just one shy of the all-time record. His 10 knockout stage objectives surpass the previous benchmark of eight held jointly by Brazilian legends Pelé and Ronaldo.
Following the match, France coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to Mbappé when substituting him in the 85th minute, bowing respectfully as his star player exited the field.
