Following his acquisition from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2026 first-round draft pick on June 26, Cossa has officially signed a two-year contract with the Mammoth, narrowly avoiding restricted free agency.
“I’m really excited,” Cossa remarked on Tuesday. “Even last summer, when I was speaking with Dylan Guenther, he couldn’t stop raving about this organization. I knew it would be a great place to join, and that feeling has only been confirmed since the trade.”
Cossa and Guenther were teammates during their time with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League from 2019 to 2022.
The 23-year-old netminder arrives following a strong campaign with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, where he posted a 26-8-4 record, a 2.33 goals-against average, a.915 save percentage, and five shutouts across 39 appearances.
“Looking at his progression in the AHL over the last few seasons, he has gained the necessary experience. His age is ideal for this transition, and he is now positioned to take the next professional step,” said Mammoth General Manager Bill Armstrong. “He is a goaltender we have targeted for a while, and he has the potential to become a cornerstone of our roster next season.”
Following the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft, Armstrong noted that the team’s scouting staff had monitored Cossa’s development for several years prior to the trade.
“We have been tracking him for a long time. Goaltenders require patience, so we have been observing his progress and waiting for the right opportunity to acquire him,” Armstrong explained. He added that scout Randy Hanch, who originally scouted Cossa during his tenure in the WHL with Edmonton, played a key role in the team’s long-term interest.
