A 19‑year‑old woman was one of three victims who suffocated during the World Cup celebrations in Mexico City on Tuesday.
A 48‑year‑old woman and a 44‑year‑old man also died after crowds flooded Mexico City following the team’s 2‑0 win over Ecuador, according to the city’s health authority on Wednesday.
Over one million people gathered in Mexico City’s streets, centering on the Angel of Independence monument downtown, to celebrate the nation’s first World Cup knockout‑stage victory since 1986, city officials reported.
Clara Brugada Molina, the city’s governor, offered her “most sincere condolences” to the families of the deceased and promised assistance in the days ahead.
“After administering first aid and CPR, the patients were taken to a hospital for specialized treatment,” the health authority stated.
All three fatalities have been confirmed as suffocation deaths and have been identified by their relatives, officials added.
