Court proceedings opened Wednesday for Yorgen Fenech, a businessman charged with orchestrating the 2017 murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, a lawyer for the victim’s family confirmed to AFP.
Fenech appeared in court in Valletta, where he faces charges tied to the assassination of Caruana Galizia, a prominent Maltese blogger known for exposing corruption among political and business figures.
Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bomb explosion near her residence on Malta, authorities report. Her death occurred shortly after she began investigating a contentious power station project in which Fenech served as a key investor.
A Maltese court previously convicted two individuals of planting the explosive device in 2022, sentencing them each to four decades in prison. A third suspect, who later cooperated with investigators, received a 15-year sentence after testifying against the others.
