While her son remains fully focused on sustaining Cape Verde’s remarkable World Cup run, Judy has briefly returned to her daily routine, though only for a short time.
Judy is set to return to her role as a school secretary in Dublin before traveling to America with her husband and Pico’s brothers to support the team in their upcoming match.
“Looking back, it’s surprising because we never imagined they would advance past the group stage,” she remarked.
“They were facing former world champions like Spain and Uruguay; we felt they only had a 1% chance. We had only planned for the three group matches, and I was prepared to head straight back to work afterward.
“The children gave me a wonderful send-off. They even made a beautiful poster to wish him luck, which I brought with me. The whole team signed it, and I can’t wait to display it in the school foyer when the students return in September.”
This tournament has been defined by unexpected results, with several heavy favorites already being eliminated.
While Judy acknowledges Argentina’s status as tournament favorites, she remains optimistic, noting that anything can happen as Cape Verde attempts to defy the odds.
“Argentina may be the favorites to win the trophy, but Cape Verde has undoubtedly become the darling of this tournament.
“It would be incredible if they progressed. In football, anything is possible. At the end of the day, it is just 90 minutes of 11 against 11, and anything can happen.
“We just hope the fairytale continues and they advance to the next round.”
