Investigators have identified a suspect linked to a parcel bombing that left a sanctioned Ukrainian-born multimillionaire and two others injured in Monaco, according to the principality’s prosecutor’s office.
An arrest warrant has been issued, and the suspect will be placed on an Interpol Red Notice effective this evening, the office added.
The Mediterranean prosecutor general stated that the individual, a foreign national, was detained in Monaco on Wednesday morning.
They were held in custody “pending further checks” before being released in the afternoon, without additional details about the individual or the reasons for suspicion.
The blast, which occurred late Monday at the entrance of an apartment building, injured a family that appeared to have been deliberately targeted, though authorities have not yet identified the victims.
Reports have identified Ukrainian construction magnate Vadym Yermolaiev among those injured.
He has said he renounced Ukrainian citizenship a decade ago and was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023 due to alleged ties to Russia; a woman and a child were also wounded.
The prosecutor noted that the child has been interviewed in neighboring France, while the other two victims remain unable to be questioned, one of whom is critically injured and whose life is still in danger.
Authorities characterized the explosion as an attempted assassination and confirmed that French officials are assisting in the investigation; analysis of the explosive device and efforts to identify the perpetrator are ongoing.
The motive behind the targeting of the family and the identity of the perpetrator remain unclear.
The attack sent shockwaves through Monaco, a small Mediterranean sovereign state renowned for its concentration of affluent residents.
Monaco’s Prince Albert II condemned the incident as “an odious act” and announced that all public services have been mobilized to ensure security.
