Mallory McMorrow, a Michigan state senator known for positioning herself between moderate and progressive factions, ended her U.S. Senate campaign on Sunday as she struggled to compete with two dominant opponents.
In a social media video, McMorrow formally announced her suspension, acknowledging challenges with both public opinion and fundraising. She expressed gratitude to supporters before stepping aside.
Her exit leaves the Democratic Senate primary race open between Representative Haley Stevens, a centrist congresswoman, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive public health advocate. Stevens receives backing from Senator Chuck Schumer and pro-Israel organizations, while El-Sayed has support from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Though McMorrow refrained from endorsing a successor, she stated she would back the primary winner.
McMorrow framed her campaign as offering a compromise alternative to the perceived “false choice” between Stevens’ establishment background and El-Sayed’s untested progressive platform. She highlighted former Governor Whitmer’s 2018 primary loss to her as evidence of El-Sayed’s untested electability.
Michigan Republicans have selected Representative Mike Rogers as their nominee, defeating former Senator Gary Peters, who is choosing not to seek re-election. The primary election is scheduled for August 4.
El-Sayed acknowledged McMorrow’s efforts in a statement, praising her combative stance against “systemic political inequities.” Stevens also thanked McMorrow for her contributions to family-centric policies in Michigan.
The Senate seat’s outcome is pivotal for Democratic efforts to maintain or gain control of the chamber in November’s midterms, requiring retention of current seats and flipping at least four Republican-held positions.
McMorrow’s initial strength in media engagement and online presence began to wane after she criticized El-Sayed for campaigning alongside Hasan Piker, a left-wing streamer associated with pro-Palestinian causes. The backlash boosted El-Sayed’s progressive credentials while alienating moderate voters, who increasingly favored Stevens through significant advertising efforts by pro-Israel organizations.
