Head coach Charlotte Edwards insists England have successfully reconnected with their supporters despite a heavy defeat to Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup final.
Edwards, a World Cup-winning captain herself, took the helm following England’s disastrous 2025 Ashes campaign, where they were whitewashed 16-0 in the multi-format points series. That series drew sharp criticism regarding the team’s fitness, fielding standards, and overall attitude.
Speaking to BBC Test Match Special after the loss at Lord’s, Edwards expressed immense pride in the cultural shift her squad has achieved.
“I couldn’t be prouder of my group or where we’re at,” Edwards said. “People are talking positively about this team now whereas they weren’t when I took over, and that is because of the work and effort the players have put in behind the scenes. We’ve won back the fans, because they’ve come out to watch us today, which is outstanding, and I can’t thank the supporters and our families enough.”
A crowd of 28,887 attended the final, which featured two unbeaten sides. England set Australia a target of 151, but the champions chased it down comfortably in 17.1 overs, spearheaded by Beth Mooney’s 64 off 49 balls. Edwards acknowledged her side were outclassed on the day but stressed the broader progress made.
“We’re not talking about fitness or fielding anymore; I wanted us to talk about the cricket,” she added. “So although we’ve missed out today, I don’t think we should be disheartened. This is a very, very good Australian team who have dominated world cricket for years, and we’re not too far away.”
Asked for her immediate reaction, Edwards admitted: “Gutted, really. We came here with so much belief and confidence to pull off something really special and I think we gave ourselves a really good shout; it didn’t look easy to bat on. But they are a very, very good team and we were completely outplayed there in the end.”
