The U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization officially dissolved on Saturday, July 4, 2026, fulfilling the termination date established by former President Donald Trump’s executive order. The cost-cutting initiative, led by billionaire tech executive Elon Musk, had aimed to reduce federal spending and streamline government operations.
Trump originally announced the DOGE initiative as a means to achieve “a smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence.”
The organization claimed to have saved $215 billion through various measures, including eliminating duplicative software licenses, canceling diversity, equity and inclusion grants, and terminating leases for underutilized office space. However, these figures have been subject to dispute and lack comprehensive documentation.
Elon Musk, who spearheaded DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts when Trump returned to office in January 2025, stepped down from his role in May of the following year. In December 2024, Musk announced that DOGE’s final step would be self-destruction.
In its final public communication, DOGE stated: “While the formal mission of DOGE has come to an end, the mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse will continue.” The X post further emphasized that “Good stewardship of taxpayer dollars and accountable government are not temporary initiatives” and concluded: “We hope those principles endure long into America’s next 250 years. It has been our greatest honor to serve the American people. Happy 4th!”
The White House defended DOGE’s work, with Press Secretary Davis Ingle stating that President Trump “was given a clear mandate to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse from the federal government” and had “made significant progress in making the federal government more efficient to better serve the American taxpayer.”
Notably, no formal closing report is expected from the Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, who emphasized that the initiative had “made some really important strides” in government efficiency.
Amy Gleason, who served as acting administrator of DOGE Service, has since transitioned to a new role leading a health technology office at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
