Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga survived a gun attack in Johannesburg, South African police reported.
The 31‑year‑old was driving through the inner‑city suburb of Hillbrow on Sunday when an unknown gunman opened fire on his vehicle, according to local sources.
Lunga, who represents Zimbabwe’s national team and plays for South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, emerged unharmed.
South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime, ranking among the countries with the highest murder rates worldwide.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that investigators are treating the incident as attempted murder; no arrests have been made so far.
She declined to give further details, but The Citizen reported that Lunga was en route to church with his younger brother when the attack occurred.
The pair were traveling through Hillbrow when the assailant fired on their car, apparently mistaking Lunga for an undercover police officer.
Lunga has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe and was included in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
He joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has contributed to multiple domestic league titles as well as the club’s second African Champions League crown, secured in May.
Neither the national team nor the club has issued a statement on the shooting, though Zimbabwe’s Warriors shared a photo of Lunga in a prayer pose with the caption “In God we trust” alongside his name.
