UK Commits $254M to Join US-led PrSM Long-Range Missile Program]
WASHINGTON — The United Kingdom has announced its decision to join the U.S. Army’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) program, allocating $254 million (£190 million) for the acquisition of long-range munitions.
The investment will provide the British Army with a deep surface-to-surface ballistic missile capability, complementing its existing Army One Way Effector (OWE) drone and ground-launched cruise missile systems. This integrated approach enhances the UK’s precision strike options in support of NATO defense and deterrence objectives.
The funding was included in the UK’s recently published Defense Investment Plan (DIP), which had faced delays and controversy. The PrSM system, capable of supersonic speeds and ranges exceeding 500 kilometers (311 miles), is fully compatible with the UK’s upgraded M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers, eliminating the need for vehicle modifications.
As the second international partner to adopt the missile, following Australia’s participation through a mid-2025 joint development agreement, the UK’s integration aligns with the AUKUS trilateral partnership’s Pillar 2 technology-sharing framework. Collaborative development efforts will involve British industry and create domestic production opportunities.
The Ministry of Defence emphasized that this procurement complements ongoing European long-range strike initiatives, including the Deep Precision Strike project with Germany, capable of reaching targets up to 2,000 kilometers. This dual-track approach ensures strategic flexibility rather than replacement of existing programs.
The announcement coincides with the NATO Leaders’ Summit in Ankara, where defense spending remains a focal point amid U.S. pressure for increased European contributions. UK officials indicated the DIP release ahead of the summit demonstrates commitment to strengthening European and NATO capabilities.
