Videos of flash‑flooded rivers and waterlogged streets spread rapidly across social media on Wednesday after Hong Kong experienced over 70 mm of rain in a single day.
The severity of the flooding led some online commentators to suggest that the circulating image was either outdated or fabricated, but a subsequent video shared by another user confirmed its authenticity.
The user noted, “I live in the village houses just above that area, so I shared the video I filmed this morning to verify it’s authentic.”
The earlier photo, circulated in a Facebook group, depicted virtually the same flooding scene near Tsuen Wan’s Allway Gardens from the previous day.
In the comment thread, another Hong Kong resident posted videos of water‑logged pavements filmed from her car window in Fanling, with a lightning flash visible in the sky.
Local forecasters reported that Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island, as well as sections of Sha Tin, Tai Po, Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O in the New Territories, recorded at least 70 mm of rain by Wednesday afternoon.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued repeated thunderstorm warnings throughout the day, beginning at 2 a.m.
