The ICC had previously warned the ECB that any video recorded in the Players’ and Match Officials Area must remain silent and cannot be published until the match ends.
At the end of the fourth day’s play, Stokes said the announcement was made during the match as part of a coordinated plan with his agents and the ECB.
He added, “I told them to work with Michael Lumb and Neil Fairbrother, who represent me, and to devise a plan.”
While Stokes was mid‑bowl when he made the announcement, his very next delivery after the news broke claimed the wicket of New Zealand’s Zak Foulkes.
The Test match, and Stokes’ international career, concluded only the next day.
The ICC introduced what it called “minimum standards” for the Players’ and Match Officials Area to bolster its anti‑corruption regulations.
Neither the ECB nor the ICC have offered comment. The ICC’s letter was dispatched the day before the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s, coinciding with a meeting between ECB chair Richard Thompson and ICC chairman Jay Shah. The ECB has not yet replied.
Stokes’ retirement leaves England searching for a new Test captain ahead of the three‑match series against Pakistan in August.
Vice‑captain Harry Brook said it would be an honour to follow Stokes, although England appears to be taking its time before naming a successor.
Uncertainty surrounding the futures of other members of England’s management, following a series of disappointing Test results and several off‑field controversies, may also influence the decision.
In the spring, head coach Brendon McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key retained their positions after a review of the 4‑1 Ashes series loss.
The ECB is currently assessing the situation with the men’s team, but may hold off on any formal announcements until the ongoing white‑ball series against India ends.
Neither Rob Key nor chief executive Richard Gould have made public comments since Stokes announced his retirement.
