India enters a crucial fourth T20I against England at Bristol on Thursday, needing a win to stay alive in the five-match series after trailing 2-0. Following their record 125-run loss at Trent Bridge, the spotlight is on whether Sanju Samson will return to the lineup.
Could Gambhir recall Sanju Samson?
Samson was omitted after the first T20I, with 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi taking his place at the top of the order. Though the teenager has shown promise, India’s batting struggles against England’s pace attack have reignited calls for Samson’s inclusion. Head coach Gautam Gambhir hinted at flexibility post-third T20I, stating there’s “no hard and fast rule” barring a comeback. This has intensified speculation about his potential return for the must-win clash.
Growing Public Demand
The Samson debate has escalated in recent days. After India’s heavy Trent Bridge defeat, fans chanted “We Want Sanju” outside the stadium as the team departed. This follows another contentious selection earlier in the tour, where Suryakumar Yadav was also excluded despite India’s T20 World Cup success.
Possible Team Adjustments
If recalled, Samson’s role in the batting order remains uncertain. Instead of removing Sooryavanshi after two games, India might reshuffle the middle order. Vice-captain Tilak Varma has underperformed, scoring 13, 24*, and 3 in the series. Ishan Kishan is likely to keep both wicketkeeping duties and his place in the XI, suggesting Samson could return as a specialist batter.
Batting and Bowling Concerns
India’s challenges extend beyond selection. England’s pace duo Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue have dominated, exploiting India’s top order with pace and bounce. They claimed seven wickets in the third T20I, as India was bowled out for 76 chasing 202. The bowling attack has also lacked consistency, with Varun Chakravarthy taking just one wicket across the series. Tactical choices, such as promoting Harshit Rana ahead of Shivam Dube, have also drawn criticism.
England’s Momentum
While India seeks solutions, England enters Bristol with confidence. Phil Salt’s match-winning 70 at Nottingham and the Archer-Tongue partnership’s dominance have put them in control. A win on Thursday would secure an unassailable 3-0 lead, while India’s loss would end the series.
