The prime minister has indicated that a supplementary bank holiday could be declared should England triumph in the World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel’s side is scheduled to face Norway in the quarter‑final match on Saturday evening.
The final is set for a week later, on Sunday, 19 July.
It is widely anticipated that Sir Keir Starmer will resign the following day, to be succeeded by Andy Burnham.
If England reach the final, it is probable that the incumbent prime minister would attend the match, potentially postponing the transition of power for a short period.
Regarding the prospect of an additional day off for the public if England wins the tournament, Starmer remarked, “I prefer not to speculate, but we can discuss it once we reach the final.”
It is understood that the extra bank holiday would fall on the Friday after England’s victory, which would be 24 July.
However, England must first win the quarter‑final, semi‑final, and final before such considerations become relevant.
