As the competition evolves, the hierarchy of top scorers has been reshaped in recent editions.

Lionel Messi currently holds the record for the most World Cup goals, with 21 strikes across five editions, including eight goals in the 2026 tournament hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, where he surpassed the previous benchmark.

Nevertheless, his record is under serious threat from Kylian Mbappé, who currently ranks second on the all‑time list. The French forward has been relentless in front of goal across each World Cup he has played, scoring four times in 2018, eight in 2022, and seven in 2026, bringing his career total to 19 goals in just 19 matches.

Miroslav Klose had held the record for twelve years prior to the 2026 edition. The German striker scored five goals in 2002, five more in 2006, four in 2010, and two in 2014, reaching 16 goals and lifting the trophy in what proved to be his final World Cup appearance.

Completing the next tier are Ronaldo Nazario and Gerd Müller. Harry Kane is among the leading pursuers of the all‑time scoring record in this edition. Having netted six goals in 2018, two in 2022, and six more in 2026, he now shares fifth place with Gerd Müller on 14 goals.
