New Wisconsin athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who previously spent eight years at Texas, sees significant parallels between his former and current institutions. Both are respected research universities located in state capitals, competing in major conferences with comparable student populations.
However, Eichorst highlighted a key distinction during his introductory press conference on Tuesday. “Texas has a certain swagger,” he noted. “With 30 million people, there’s a natural confidence. Wisconsin has that potential too, but we tend to pair it with humility. It’s time to elevate our posture and take pride in our achievements.”
This mindset could revitalize Wisconsin’s football program, which has struggled recently after a 22-year streak of winning seasons (2002-2023). Eichorst, who signed a five-year contract worth $1.6 million annually with performance incentives, takes over following Chris McIntosh’s departure to the Big Ten. His prior tenure at Wisconsin (2006-2011) coincided with Barry Alvarez’s leadership and Bret Bielema’s coaching era.
Before returning to Madison, Eichorst held athletic director roles at Miami (2011-2012) and Nebraska (2012-2017). His Nebraska tenure ended amid criticism of football decisions, including the firing of coach Bo Pelini in 2014 and the subsequent dismissal of Mike Riley in 2017. However, Wisconsin officials emphasized his contributions to Texas’ success, where the Longhorns claimed five Learfield Directors’ Cup titles in six years.
At Texas, Eichorst helped elevate programs that had stagnated before 2018. “Success didn’t happen overnight,” he said. “We rebuilt systems and prioritized excellence across the board.”
Eichorst praised Wisconsin’s coaching staff, stating, “Your program’s strength lies in its leaders. If you unite elite coaches who collaborate and innovate, you create something special. That’s what we did at Texas.”
A Wisconsin native from Lone Rock, Eichorst emphasized his personal connection to the university. “This role means everything to me. I’ve lived the passion here, and I’ll work tirelessly to restore the program’s identity and honor its legacy in college athletics.”
