Half a year into 2026, the PGA Tour season is drawing to a close with the final major imminent. Equipment innovations have defined the year, creating notable shifts in the gear employed by the sport’s leading players.
Recent modifications, such as Bryson DeChambeau’s prototype TaylorMade driver and Jordan Spieth’s experimental putter change, attracted considerable attention, while other adjustments have produced enduring effects, including contributions to major championship victories.
Rory McIlroy dabbles with cavity backs
McIlroy began 2026 with a set of TaylorMade P7CB cavity-back irons, employing them in both the TGL league and his initial DP World Tour events in the Middle East. His experimentation with cavity-back long irons began at the Australian Open, where he appreciated the performance and subsequently adopted the entire set by week’s end. The irons remained in play through his first TGL matches and the Dubai Invitational. Reflecting on the experiment, McIlroy noted, “If there’s help to be had, I’ll definitely take it.” He observed that misstruck 5‑irons that previously fell short by five to seven yards now fell short by ten to fifteen yards, indicating a marked change in launch characteristics. Although the early results were encouraging, the cavity‑back configuration failed to become permanent, and he reverted to his custom RORS Protos for his first stroke‑play event at Pebble Beach. McIlroy explained that the decision hinged less on performance and more on familiarity, stating that the feel and weighting of the cavity backs produced a different ball flight tendency compared to his traditional blades.

Wyndham Clark finds ‘the one’
Wyndham Clark, who entered 2026 as a gear free agent, experimented widely at the season’s outset, testing five different drivers before turning his focus to putters. His search was playful, with Clark describing the process as “dating” various clubs, even carrying a putter purchased from his home club’s pro shop to the Players Championship. Since the Houston event, he has exclusively used Ping’s Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset putter, later adopting a counterbalanced version of the model. This configuration restored his putting performance to the elite level that preceded his three victories in nine months, including his maiden U.S. Open triumph. The partnership between Clark and Ping was officially confirmed during the U.S. Open week, a timing that proved fortuitous as Clark captured his second U.S. Open title, underscoring the synergy and generating considerable attention for the putter line.
McLaren debuts with big Justin Rose splash
McLaren Golf unveiled its entry into the equipment market at the end of April, an introduction highlighted by the appointment of Justin Rose as both brand ambassador and investor. Having secured two wins and consistent top‑three finishes at the Masters over the preceding eight months, Rose — then 45 — opted to commit exclusively to McLaren’s nascent golf‑equipment program rather than remain a free agent. The former world number one showcased a combined set of McLaren Series 1 and Series 3 irons, which employ Metal Injection Molding technology, at the Cadillac Championship. In a press conference ahead of the tournament, Rose remarked, “McLaren Golf has been in development for many months; my involvement began at the project’s inception, assisting engineers and testing early prototypes.” Since debuting the irons in Miami, Rose has continued to fine‑tune his setup and hinted at the forthcoming release of additional clubs. Across his last five events, he has missed the top‑25 only once.
