Jayden Adams, a South African midfielder who featured at the 2022 World Cup, died on Saturday at the age of 25.
South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie issued a statement expressing deep shock: “It is with profound sadness that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.”
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” the minister added, without revealing the cause of death.
Police confirmed that the body of a 25‑year‑old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing, a police spokesperson told AFP.
Adams appeared in all three of South Africa’s group‑stage matches during the World Cup, helping the team reach the Round of 32 for the first time. He was not selected for the subsequent knockout loss to Canada.
He was also a member of the squad that secured third place at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
This remains a developing story; further details will be released in due course.
