South African Midfielder Jayden Adams, 25, Dies During 2026 World Cup

South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who was part of his nation’s squad at the ongoing 2026 World Cup, has died at the age of 25, according to Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

In an official statement, McKenzie expressed his condolences: “I learned of Jayden Adams’s passing with deep shock and a heavy heart.”

He added that “South African football has been robbed of one of its most promising young stars.”

The minister did not reveal the circumstances or cause of death.

Law enforcement authorities have launched a probe after a 25-year-old man’s body was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a central Cape Town suburb, on Saturday morning.

Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk informed AFP that “the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.”

During the tournament, Adams appeared in all three of South Africa’s group-stage fixtures but was absent from the lineup in the team’s knockout-stage loss to Canada.

A Cape Town native, Adams started his professional journey with Stellenbosch FC and moved to Mamelodi Sundowns — the CAF Champions League titleholders — in January 2025.

His untimely death follows closely on the heels of his grandmother’s death less than a month earlier, which occurred just before South Africa’s Group A encounter with Czechia at Atlanta Stadium.

At that time, the South African Football Association noted, “Jayden played from the start against Czechia and poured his heart into the match despite the personal loss of his grandmother.”
